"All You Need to Know About Performing in the U.S.A" - Immigation Seminar to be Held in Regina and Saskatoon

July 30, 2014

SASKMUSIC, in partnership with the REGINA FOLK FESTIVAL and CANADIAN FEDERATION OF MUSICIANS, presents

"All You Need to Know About Performing in the U.S.A."

SASKATOON - Wednesday, August 6 at 7 PM at the Delta Bessborough - “Salon Batoche”

REGINA - Thursday, August 7 at 7 PM at the Radisson Plaza Hotel Saskatchewan - “Saskatchewan Suite”

Scary stories abound of musicians being turned back from the U.S. border when heading down for confirmed showcases or full-on tours, but it may actually be even easier than before to cross the border. If you’re ready to break into the U.S. and start doing tours, showcases, or setting up co-writes, and want to do so with the least amount of headache, expense and risk, this is the seminar for you! Even if you’ve successfully crossed borders before, very recent changes to U.S. immigration laws may require you to do things differently.

You’ll learn everything from how to successfully (and legally) enter the U.S. for showcasing and songwriting collaborations, to touring and withholding tax requirements - and the necessity of a Carnet, as well as CITIES permits (if you have instruments containing rare woods or banned imports such as ivory). We’ll explain how to get your CDs and merch cleared. We’ll also explain the various categories of U.S. work permits, and how to protect yourself under travel, health, and liability insurance.

The workshops will be led by Liana White, Executive Director and U.S. immigration expert with Canadian Federation of Musicians. White has worked for the CFM (formerly known as American Federation of Musicians, Canada) since 1996, starting as the Artist Immigration Administrator, and throughout her tenure, White has been involved in artist immigration matters. With almost 20 years of immigration-related service, White has become recognized within the music industry as an authority on the cross border requirements for musicians performing in the United States and in Canada. White’s vast experience has been called upon for interviews, articles, and many presentations over the years – to name only a few, she has written articles for Canadian Musician Magazine, Songwriters Association of Canada, Music Manitoba, and Canadian Conference of the Arts; and has give presentations and interviews for the collection of the East Coast music industry associations including the ECMA, Folk Music Canada, The New Indie (Volume II) and mainstream media.
